My PA is self-isolating because they have symptoms of Covid-19 (fever/new & continuous cough), what do i do? – Updated 27/3/2020

The PA will be entitled to statutory sick pay for the first 14 days of self-isolation (providing they are eligible for SSP) and after this time they will need a sick note to cover any absence. They can obtain an isolation note here:    https://111.nhs.uk/isolation-note/

Follow your usual sickness absence procedure and pay procedure, however if they have a genuine concern that it may be Coronavirus and can provide an isolation note confirming that they are suffering with flu-like symptoms, then statutory sick pay can be paid (if PA qualify for SSP) for 14 days. The government will reimburse the employer for the first 14 days of sick pay. The government is yet to announce how to apply for a reimbursement of the first 14 days of SSP.

Your Personal Assistant (PA) will only be eligible to received SSP if they earn over £118 per week. If your PA hours vary – work out an average of their pay over the last 12 weeks – if this is £118 or over, they are eligible for SSP. If it is less than £118 per week, they are not eligible for SSP and it would therefore be UNPAID. Your PA maybe able to claim benefits or discuss if possible, taking Annual Leave. More benefits info links below.

Please inform your payroll provider asap if thaere are any changes to your PA’s working arrangements or hours etc.
